Flavio Maddonni

Graduated in violin and viola from the Conservatory “N. Piccinni” in Bari, Flavio Maddonni furthered his studies with C. Grasso, D. Trkuljia, D. Szigmondy, and P. Vernikov, and at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole under the guidance of P. Farulli, A. Nannoni, G. Garbarino, A. Faja, and G. Prencipe.

He maintains an active career as both soloist and chamber musician in Italy and abroad, performing in Sweden, Tunisia, Germany, Austria, Romania, Bolivia, Argentina, and Ecuador. He has collaborated with distinguished artists such as L. De Fusco, K. Bogino, B. Lupo, E. Arciuli, M. Caroli, and J. Girotto. As a soloist, he has appeared in major theatres and international festivals, including the Teatro Municipal of Puebla, the Teatro de la Ciudad de León, and the Festival Cervantino in Mexico; Fordham University in New York (USA); the International Renaissance and Baroque Music Festival of Santa Cruz (Bolivia); and the Brahms Festival in Pörtschach (Austria).

He has served as concertmaster of the chamber orchestras “Musica Nova” of Benevento and Sannio and “Harmonia” of the University of Bari. He has been a member of the Orchestra Giovanile Italiana, the “Cantelli” Orchestra, the “G. Verdi” Symphony Orchestra of Milan, the provincial orchestras of Foggia and Bari, the Orchestra Internazionale d’Italia, and the Orchestra of the Società dei Concerti of Bari. He has performed under the baton of renowned conductors such as Carlo Maria Giulini, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, Gianandrea Noseda, Yutaka Sado, Peter Maag, Ulf Schirmer, and Daniel Oren, collaborating with internationally acclaimed soloists including Salvatore Accardo, Richard Stoltzman, Mstislav Rostropovich, Gerhard Oppitz, and Enrico Dindo. With these ensembles, he has toured throughout Europe, the United States, Mexico, Switzerland, and Japan.

As principal viola of the Orchestra of the Teatro Petruzzelli, he took part in international tours in China, France, Spain, Turkey, and Russia with Mozart’s Così fan tutte (directed by Giorgio Strehler).

Alongside his instrumental career, he is also active as a conductor, performing in Italy, at the International Festival of Belfort (France), and in England with Mandhira De Saram of the Ligeti Quartet. Since 2003, he has been deeply committed to the training of young chamber and orchestral ensembles.

He has recorded numerous CDs for labels including Nuova Era, Sony Classical, Warner, BMG, Dynamic, and others, and has recorded for BBC, Radio France, RAI (Eurovision), Bolivision, and Fox Television. He holds the chair of Music Theory at the Conservatory “N. Rota” in Monopoli and has given lectures and masterclasses at universities in Turkey and Finland.


Antonino Maddonni

An eclectic guitarist, composer, and arranger, Antonino Maddonni graduated in classical guitar from the Conservatory “N. Piccinni” in Bari under L. Calsolaro. He further refined his studies with internationally renowned masters such as Alirio Díaz, Oscar Ghiglia, and Ruggero Chiesa at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, as well as in prestigious masterclasses in Verona, Faenza, Otranto, and Bari, earning scholarships and awards of merit. He also deepened his study of 20th-century compositional techniques with composer A. Giacometti.

Winner of numerous first prizes in national and international guitar and chamber music competitions, he founded the “Mauro Giuliani” Trio (flute, clarinet, guitar) in 1987. With this ensemble, he developed much of his international concert career and recorded extensively for labels such as Fonit-Cetra, Warner, Bongiovanni, Phoenix, and Digressione Music.

His artistic activity spans classical and contemporary repertoire, multimedia experimentation, and improvisation. He has participated in major international festivals including Time Zones, the Coretto Contemporary Music Festival, the Babilonia Festival, and the Mediterranean Festival, exploring dialogue between music, theatre, painting, poetry, and new technologies.

He has performed throughout Italy and toured internationally in Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Spain, Malta, Greece, Morocco, Egypt, India, Tunisia, Iraq, Switzerland, and Turkey.

Composer of works for guitar, chamber music, and computer music, he has published revisions of works by Mauro Giuliani and original compositions with the Danish publisher Bergmann Editions. His music has been broadcast on RAI 2, RAI 3, Radio Vaticana, Radio Nacional Española, and other international broadcasters.

Formerly professor of guitar at the Conservatory “N. Rota” in Monopoli, he regularly gives advanced courses and masterclasses in Italy and within the Erasmus programme at Turkish universities.
